Kimber capturing huge piles of drywall, personal possessions and garbage. Hurricane Harvey has affected many people in Southern Texas. We would like to express how grateful we are to the many people in Texas and throughout the country who responded with such generosity and speed to the widespread devastation. Value Vinyls’ Senior Account Manager and North Houston resident, Kimber Easthom, has been volunteering with clean up and recovery efforts. Through her experience, here is little insight into how lives have been impacted. One home owner struggled to make it out of her home with her dogs before it was too late. She returned to find her home in total ruins. Additionally, Kimber learned that many of the owner’s personal possessions like jewelry and furniture were tossed out by a drywall removal crew in error. Being touched by the owner’s story, Kimber and friends kicked into high-gear to retrieve as much of the owner’s possessions as possible. Kimber recalled, “It was pretty incredible to see so many different people coming together to help.” She added, “There were trucks delivering sandwiches and water. Others were helping with laundry to save clothing. Some cleaning out houses and organizing salvageable possessions.” Describing her experience, Kimber said, “Seeing it all first hand was just so heartwarming and overwhelming. It was amazing to see how people can come together. There is still much to be done.” In response, all of us at the Dallas headquarters put together a car load of supplies and our very own Lauris Diaz, Accounting Manager, delivered the supplies to Kimber. Fortunately, this story of overcoming and community is just one of thousands. Again, we at Value Vinyls express our thanks to all who have pitched in and to those who are still helping our Houstonian neighbors recover. If you would like to help, we encourage you to donate to the Salvation Army. By designating Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma or Hurricane Maria, 100% of your donation will go to your choice. This month we will complete everyone’s favorite subject, flame retardancy and testing! The good news is, this is the last of three blogs addressing the three main FR testing methods. To refresh from my previous blog, the three FR test methods used for most Architectural Fabrics, Shadecloth and Vinyl Material are ASTM E-84, NFPA 701, and California State Fire Marshall (CSFM) Title 19. In my last two Dr. Shade blogs, we covered the CSFM and NFPA 701, so this month we are covering the ASTM E-84 Fire Retardancy test method. ASTM E-84 is a voluntary industry FR specification, and ASTM International who is an international standards organization, does not keep the detailed records on which fabrics pass. ASTM is typically used for wall covering and was the industry FR test standard for many years. It is now mostly used for indoor fabrics and some specialty outdoor fabrics. So, what is ASTM E84? ASTM E-84 is intended to provide only comparative measurements of surface flame spread and smoke density with that of select grade red oak and fiber-cement board surfaces under the specific fire exposure conditions. Simply put, ASTM E-84 measures the flame spread and smoke index, which are considered the surface burning characteristics of a material. Depending on the numbers, materials can have classifications of Class A, B, or C according to NFPA, ANSI/NFPA No. 101, “life Safety Code”, 2006 Edition, or IBC (International Building Code), 2006 Edition, Chapter 8, Interior Finishes, Section 803, if they pass any level of this standard. The test is conducted in a fire tunnel using a 22″ x 24′ sample of the material. The ignition source is 7 seconds in duration, total test is 10 minutes. The flame front cannot exceed 24” during the test. Results are expressed as Flame Spread Index, and Smoke Developed Value. Following are the criteria for each level of this test, regardless of whether NFPA or IBC. For products that pass these criteria Class A, Flame Spread 1-25, Smoke Developed Less than or equal to 450 Class B, Flame Spread 26-75, Smoke Developed Less than or equal to 450 Class C, Flame Spread 76-200, Smoke Developed Less than or equal to 450 Please note, this test is comparable to UL 723, ANSI/NFPA No 255, and UBC No. 8-1 ASTM International does not do testing and certification of fabric, so you’ll need to have your material tested by an independent testing lab if you require a certificate. Value Vinyls have many fabrics that meet ASTM E-84 Standards. For more information contact us at the following link Value Vinyls, or call us at 877-716-6651. Hello, Dr. Shade here. I’m excited to introduce to you the SIOEN line of high quality Fluomax Structural Fabrics. As Director of Structure Fabric Sales for Value Vinyls, I work closely with SIOEN and know the quality of their products and the way they stand behind them. I’m proud to say that Value Vinyls is the Sole North American Supplier of SIOEN Structure Fabrics as well as other SIOEN Industrial Style Fabrics. SIOEN is the world market leader in coated technical textiles and technical apparel, protecting people and their belongings. SIOEN manufactures a broad range of tension structure fabrics and competes on a global scale against the largest tension structure fabric manufacturers. SIOEN is the world’s largest coater with completely integrated vertical manufacturing from start to finish. SIOEN manufactures coated fabrics ranging from 650 GSM to 1600 GSM, offering three types of coating options used to protect the fabrics from UV. One option is a PVDF Fluomax coating, applied on the top side of the fabric and Acrylic coating on the bottom. This formulation is referred to as “E” finish, and is designated after the fabric type. Another option is referred to as the “F” finish, and this option has a PVDF Fluomax coating applied on the top and bottom of the fabric. A third option is the “T” finish, which Titanium PVDF Fluomax is applied on the top and a PVDF Fluomax is coating on the bottom. The primary difference in these three options is the lifespan and durability of the fabric. While the “E” finish is a 10-year warranty the “F” and “T” options are 15 and 20-year options respectfully. All SIOEN line tension structure fabrics are designated by a “T” at the front of the product number and the E, F, or T coating type at the end. These SIOEN Fluomax Fabrics use a yarn with an Anti-wicking treatment to guard against wicking, making them more stable and assuring a longer life span. Sioen fabrics are the world standard and line up against many of the most well-known fabric brands here in the United States, as well as compete against, and lead the charge on a global scale. Value Vinyls can provide full technical detail of the SIOEN line along with a comparison against the most popular brand of tension structure fabrics, including but not limited to the material, mechanical, and physical properties. See These Amazing Fabrics at The Upcoming IFAI Expo! Value Vinyls will be featuring these products at the upcoming IFAI EXPO, Sept. 27th– 29th in New Orleans, LA – Booth #1127. The United States is exporting more and more goods each year. Exports in the United States have averaged 51,828.29 (in Millions USD) from 1950 until 2017, reaching an all-time high of 200,144 (in Millions USD) in October of 2014 up from 125,000 (in Millions USD) in 2009 and a record low of 772 (in Millions USD) in March of 1950. The US is currently on pace to meet the all-time high again this year. So, what is all this talk about REACH Standards and how does that equate to opportunities? First let’s address the standard. REACH is an acronym that stands for Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH). REACH is a European Union regulation established in 2006 and in full force as of 2017 that addresses the production and use of chemical substances, and how they may impact human health and the environment. This standard is the strictest European law regulating chemical substances that affects industries all over the world. Close to 143,000 chemical substances is registered for used and 173,000 substances are on the SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern) list. The European Chemicals Agency manages the administrative, technical and scientific elements of REACH and must be notified if there is a presence of SVHC’s in articles if the total quantity used is more than one ton per year and the SVHC is present at more than 0.1% of the mass of the object. Keeping pace with export vinyl materials that are becoming more in demand, Value Vinyls has developed several coated vinyl products that meet REACH standards. Available in 18, 22 and 40 ounce weights these durable products are designed for many general industrial type applications that require outdoor strength and wear ability. These products meet FR standards making them excellent for indoor use as well. Need something different than what is available? Value Vinyls has the capability to provide you with a customized product that will meet REACH standards; be it a special weight, width, emboss, color or top coating requirement. There are three primary FR test methods that are used for Architectural Fabrics, Shadecloth and most Vinyl Fabrics; ASTM E-84, NFPA 701, and California State Fire Marshall (CSFM) Title 19. In my last blog we covered CSFM testing at length, so this month I will discuss the NFPA 701 test method. NFPA is an acronym for the National Fire Protection Association, which is a United States trade association made up of U.S. members and some international members. Founded in 1896, its primary purpose creates and maintains private, copyrighted standards and codes for usage and adoption by local governments. One of those standards is NFPA 701. So, what is NFPA 701? NFPA 701-15 (the most recent revision of the NFPA 701) measures the mass before test, mass after test, mass loss percentage, the number of seconds of any burning drips, and the after flame of the material in seconds during and after a specified burn period at a specified flame temperature. Once the flame is extinguished the after flame in seconds is measured. 10 samples are tested, 5 in the machine direction, 5 in the cross direction (also known as warp/weft respectively). This test is a Pass/Fail test based on the following criteria. If the material fails any of the following criteria, it fails the test Mass Loss: 40% Maximum Average or Average + 3 Standard Deviations Maximum Individual Drip Burn/Afterflame: 2 seconds maximum average There are different sections of the test method itself, intended for different categories of products. NFPA 701 Test Method 1 is intended more for interior products such as curtains and draperies; NFPA 701 Test Method 2 is designed for outdoor materials such as awnings, tents, and tarps. Many state and local governments have not developed their own standards; instead they require that architectural fabrics used in public spaces meet the NFPA 701 standard. The 2005 Florida Fire Prevention Code, for example, specifies in Chapter 20 that fabric used in places of assembly must meet NFPA 701 standards. Some states and cities, however, have developed their own standards and/or procedures such as California with the State Fire Marshal, compliance with CSFM Title 19 of the California Code of Regulations. These requirements are separate and distinct from NFPA 701 standards. While the State of New York and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts both accept NFPA 701 certification, New York City requires certification that fabrics meet requirements outlined in Title 27 (Chapters 1 and 4) of the New York Administrative Code, while the City of Boston requires that end users submit an application for a use permit, in advance, for each fabric to be used in a public space. NFPA 701 is a voluntary industry specification, and the NFPA does not keep the detailed records on which fabrics pass. NFPA 701 is, however, the flammability specification quoted in the International Building Code for products such as canopies. It is perhaps the most widely quoted flammability specification for specialty fabric products in the United States. The NFPA headquarters, located in Quincy MA is not a testing facility so any material tested will need to be done at an independent lab. Value Vinyls have many fabrics that meet NFPA 701 Standards. For more information contact us at the following link Value Vinyls, or call us at 877-716-6651. When it comes to Value Vinyls’ complete line of vinyl products, rest assured we have given every product a full examination to validate their individual specifications. Why is this important? There are many products on the market today that are misrepresented or by using the right marketing twist, leads one to believe the product will perform better than the specifications will indicate. Value Vinyls operates a well-equipped laboratory used for testing and quality control of vinyl materials that we sell to our customers, as well as researching and testing of many vinyl materials that are in the development stages. This very important aspect of our company sets us apart from many of our competitors, giving us the opportunity to provide our customers with the exact products required to meet or exceed the specification standards they wish to achieve. Joshua Propp is the Senior Technical & Development Manager for Value Vinyls. His primary responsibilities are to work with our manufacturing sources keeping Value Vinyls on the cutting edge with the most current vinyl fabrics available in the industry today. Additionally, Josh oversees our in-house laboratory that is run by Mary Ann Scott, Quality Assurance Manager for Value Vinyls. Mary Ann handles the day to day lab operations and conducts testing projects. The Value Vinyls Laboratories offer a full range of tests that are critical for meeting the customers’ product specifications, including; Abrasion; Adhesion; Tongue & Trapezoid Tear, Grab & Strip Tensile; Elongation; Puncture; Color Consistency; UV; Fading; Yellowing; Crazing; Cracking and Hazing; and much more. This month with Dr. Shade we are going to talk about Flame Retardancy for shadecloth, which to some folks is an ugly subject or to others a real bother, but as mom would say, “It’s for your own good”! There are three main test methods for shadecloth as well as other exterior architectural fabrics. They are; ASTM E-84, NFPA 701 Method 2, and one of the toughest tests to pass; the California State Fire Marshall Title 19 or (CSFM Title 19). Each of these tests has a separate method and while all of them promulgate flammability specifications, you cannot get one certificate that covers them all. Today we are going to address in depth the CSFM Title 19 Test Method and its importance to shadecloth. Did you know that Value Vinyls is proud to be the sole U.S. distributor for Monotec 370 Shadecloth, which is the only Mono/Mono shade cloth on the market today with a CSFM Title 19 pass certificate. This certificate must be renewed on an annual basis and Value Vinyls has just received the renewed certificate. So, what is CSFM Title 19? California State Fire Marshal Title 19. The state of California is a frontrunner in the United States when it comes to flammability, often initiating stricter flammability requirements before the rest of the country. This means that California State Fire Marshal certification is sometimes recognized outside of California, so it’s a specification you need to be aware of. Of course, the opposite is also true. When presented with a flame certificate from the CSFM, some local code officials may question the certificate. Knowing how it compares to other specifications may be of assistance in that situation. (See chart below.) In addition to differences in test specifics, such as sample size and exposure to the flame source, the CSFM specification differs from the rest in one other important aspect—documentation. In order to qualify for CSFM certification, a fabric manufacturer not only must have their materials tested by an independent lab approved by the CSFM, but also send the material directly to the CSFM office to be tested there. The result is extra bureaucracy for the fabric suppliers, but a handy tool for end-product manufacturers. The Fire Engineering Department at the California State Fire Marshal has an online database of fabrics and films that have achieved its certification. Go to http://osfm.fire.ca.gov/fireengineering.html Monotec 370 FR is the only shadecloth on the market today that meets all the FR specifications noted above and is the strongest fabric on the market along with having the best warranty in the business; 15 years for non-FR and 10 years for FR. Value Vinyls has recently renewed our Monotec 370 FR CSFM Title 19 certification, click HERE if you would like us to send you the latest copy along with a Monotec brochure, or call us at 877-716-6651 to discuss the options for your project using Monotec. Summer is near which means the sun is beating down on us all and Melanoma is a concern! According to the AIM at Melanoma Foundation, Melanoma accounts for about 1% of all skin cancer cases, but makes up the vast majority of skin cancer deaths. Here is the eye opener, an estimated 87,110 new cases of invasive melanoma will be diagnosed in the U.S. in 2017. An estimated 9,730 people will die of melanoma in 2017. That’s an alarming 11% death ratio. What is the cause? Nearly all melanomas are caused by the sun! Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is the primary risk factor for melanoma. Most people will take cover from the sun’s heat without even thinking of the UV exposure. The good news is, learning how you can protect yourself from UV radiation can help reduce your risk of melanoma. Because of the increased awareness of this deadly disease, many recreation facilities, businesses with outdoor seating, pools, parks, and other public venues are installing shade structures for protection from the sun. These structures can range from pavilions with a solid roof to structures that are built with shadecloth fabrics. This means the demand has gone up for shadecloth fabrics that will block both heat and UV rays. Value Vinyls offers Monotec 370 Shadecloth which blocks the heat and most importantly, harmful UV rays, providing a comfortable shaded area below. Manufactured by Pro-Knit Industries in Australia, Monotec 370 is a globally recognized, award winning, high performance shadecloth and is the perfect fabric solution for architectural shade sails and structures. Monotec 370 has no Re-Tensioning after installation, is highly wind & tear resistant and carries the industry’s only 15-year UV warranty; 10-year warranty for FR colors. For more information on Monotec 370 Shadecloth or any of our vinyl products, contact us at this link: Value Vinyls or call 877-716-6651. With the advanced technology that is now available in printing equipment, the ease of digital and screen printing is being used on almost any type of substrate. We are experiencing a higher demand for industrial vinyl material that is printable. One example where we have seen a significant increase is in the school systems for printable fabrics used in gymnasiums and field sports. More wall pads, gym mats and landing pads are being personalized with team mottos and logos done in school colors. The National Center for Educational Statistics indicates there are close to 100,000 public schools and over 33,000 private schools with an additional 7,000 post-secondary schools in the United States. Now that is a fair number of gymnasiums and fields used for sports! Many other institutions are using printable materials for similar applications, including over 36,000 Fitness Centers and 227 sports stadiums with a seating capacity of 20,000 + as several more examples. As well, there are many other industrial markets that are using fabric for messaging and advertising. With all that said the question is, do you have a need for printable industrial vinyl? Value Vinyls is the premiere supplier of industrial PVC for many industries in need of printable vinyl. We produce a wide variety of PVC laminated and coated reinforced vinyl fabrics and vinyl mesh for every type of industrial application. Our printable PVC vinyl is designed to be durable and available in many different colors and embosses. These products are treated against UV and mildew, assuring your indoor-outdoor products can withstand adverse weather conditions. On top of all that, we offer PVC vinyl options that are fire retardant and CPSIA (6P) certified, have no detection of DnHP (7P), contain the lowest levels of lead on the market, and are phthalate-free, guaranteeing they are safe for children. Have you noticed when you’re out in public walking down the street or taking in a shopping mall how many signs there are just looking at you begging for your attention? Hundreds, even thousands of signs in all shapes, sizes, colors and styles. Some that are permanent, some that light up and then some just hang on a wall or a pole. The point is; signs are a very big part of our everyday life and for those working in the sign industry, this is a big and demanding commitment. One specific type of vinyl sign media that I want to focus on today is PET printable vinyl. The acronym, PET stands for Polyethylene Terephthalate. Polyethylene is a polymerized thermoplastic ethylene resin, used to make vinyl film and Terephthalate is a thermoplastic polyester resin made from ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid, also used to make films or fibers, like what is used for water bottles. Polyethylene terephthalate has high strength, is flexible and resistant to abrasion. The addition of these laminated films make for an extraordinarily smooth and scrim-less vinyl that works extremely well for print media. Value Vinyls sells PET Sign Media Printable Vinyl which is one of our most popular products. PET Frontlit and PET Blockout banner material is widely accepted for the quality of the fabric and the graphics that are produced. Value Vinyls Rio Extra PET 13 oz. Ultra-Smooth is a more economical Grey-Back that can be used for printing on one side, which helps eliminate image show through. Stocked in a 54” width and capable up to a 126” width. With an ultra-smooth surface, it is ideal for screen and digital printing where the need for brilliant graphics are a must. In addition, Value Vinyls sells Rio PET 15 oz. Opaque Ultra Smooth. This is a Blockout fabric for consistent printing on both sides that will produce vivid eye catching graphics. Stocked up to an 80” width and capable up to 126” For more information, give us a call at 877-716-6651 or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and let us help you with this product or any of your printable vinyl needs.
The tornadoes that hit Canton, Texas and the surrounding area April 29th were devastating to many people. There are a lot of folks that need help, so we are reaching out by social media appealing to everyone that may be willing to donate. Here is a note from one of our customers that has been effected. With his help, we delivered some of our vinyl material to cover damaged rooftops. “Good morning!! A lot has gone on over the last 5 days for a lot of people in east TX. Not everyone was as lucky as I was. It looks like a different place out there now. A lot of people have lost everything and are struggling to pick up the pieces and move forward. Normally I am not short for words and I can ramble on forever. I wanted to say a quick thank you for all of the material I picked up yesterday. I can not express how much it means to everyone. I delivered all the material last night and was able to get one roof covered, two trucks that have no windows and hopefully 4 more roofs today. It was nice to see the smiles on their faces and to see a little relief in their eyes as we covered their roof. It means a lot. Not sure how we can ever repay you for it. If any of you ever need anything I hope I am the first call you make. I will be there. Thanks again, Nick Bouchard, Innovative Industrial Solutions“ We wanted to piggy back onto Nick’s effort as a call to action and a reminder for us to look after one another and make regular donations (money, clothes, food, etc.) to keep disaster relief charities stay prepared for times like these. The Red Cross and FEMA have been two of the most active charity organizations in the Canton area. There have also been several churches helping and other organizations as well. Follow this link for more information on where to donate: http://cw33.com/2017/05/01/east-texas-tornadoes-canton-recovery-how-to-help-east-texas-tornado-victims/ One family that Nick is aware of needing help is CJ and Brittani Harden. CJ and his family rode out the tornado as their house was completely taken away. They were lucky that they survived but they lost everything. Their house, barn and all of their personal belongings that were in the structures. There is a GoFundME page set up for them. Here is the link https://www.gofundme.com/cjandbrittani. We are sure there are a number of other families with GoFundMe accounts as well. Just as a note to those in the industry, CJ is a member of SWIFA and does electrical work for a lot of awning companies. We thank Nick Bouchard and all of you for your support!
Water parks have become a huge part of summer entertainment growing in numbers over the last 15 years. It’s amazing how some of these parks have grown in park size by adding many new water rides and colorful themes to attract more people. Did you know there are over 1,300 water parks that are in operation in the U.S. attracting over 85 million people each year. Most of the parks feature water amusements such as floating rivers, water slides and water waves where they require the use of inflatable rafts. This is where the need for durable material is required for these rafts to handle the abuse they will take being used over and over each day. Waterpark rafts come in all sizes and configurations depending on the ride. A raft may only need to accommodate one person or it may accommodate an entire group of 5 or 6 people. There are many specifics that need to be taken into consideration to use the correct vinyl. For example, the top coat is important allowing for comfort when the rider’s skin is in contact with the material. Also, having material that will provide a secure weld without issue of the seams coming undone is critical. Of course, the material itself must be strong that will provide long term wear and durability. Value Vinyls offers an extraordinary line of vinyl products that can handle the durable requirements and daily abuse these rafts will take. One of our primary products is AquaFloat 32, a premium coated fabric that will hold air and perform exceptionally well under excessive water use. We are in the vinyl business to help you build inflatable watersports products by using the safest most dependable material available. Inflatable Rafts are used for many other outdoor water sports activities, such as river or lake use that may require an even tougher more rugged material. Value Vinyls can handle your needs. When it comes to billboard style advertising, Building Wraps have become a popular way of plastering a colorful graphic with a good message on the side of a tall building. This is mega marketing at its best! Advertising by way of Building Wraps have become big business and it speaks for itself all over the country, especially in larger metropolitan cities. These amazingly vivid works of art can be looked at in one aspect as advertisements that transition a space on the side of a building into a marketing device which not only will grab one’s attention, but results in generating sales. Building Wraps are also used to mask construction sites where building renovations are being done, even to show the new architectural design of how the building will look by printing a representation of it on the Building Wrap itself. Building Wraps can be customized to cover most any shape structure. They can also be custom fit to hide scaffolding that is set up in front of a building. Building codes must be addressed when putting up a Building Wrap and because this type of signage is temporary, compliance with city codes are usually not as time consuming with fewer permit approvals compared to permanent signs. Using the right material for Building Wraps will make a big difference with the durability of the fabric and the print quality of the graphics that are displayed. Using a printable mesh with anywhere from 35% to 40% air flow will allow normal wind conditions to blow through adequately, which can mean the difference of the material holding up or becoming tattered and torn due to wind whip. Value Vinyls offers RIO 9 oz. Mesh Supreme that will provide beautiful eye catching graphics, yet durable for outdoor use in vigorous weather conditions and has adequate air flow for holding up in normal to turbulent winds. RIO 9 oz. Mesh Supreme has proven itself many times over, displaying beautiful artwork and brand messaging on skyscrapers and other city tower buildings across the country. Known projects up to 11,000 square feet have been done with RIO 9 oz. Mesh Supreme. RIO 9 oz. Mesh Supreme has superior digital printability using solvent, UV or Latex Inks and is available with a film liner for large format printers that require a backing. RIO 9 oz. comes in several roll widths including a 196” width to accommodate for large building surface areas with fewer weld seams. So if you are currently printing Building Wraps or you have a grand format printer and are possibly looking to start, Value Vinyls is your trusted source! By: Marc Shellshear / Dr. Shade Typical testing for shade cloth is as important as the fabric itself! The reason is evident; when you spend the time and money to build an expensive structure that holds the shade cloth itself, you want the fabric to withstand all elements. In this article, we are going to discuss typical testing for commercial shade cloth. There are several tests that are considered standard tests. Australia leads the globe in shade cloth protection so their standards are the benchmark for testing shade cloth, most companies test to Australian standards. Value Vinyls is the sole distributor and stocks a full color line of Monotec 370 Shade Cloth, manufactured in Australia. First is a simple test used to determine the weight of the fabric however, weight doesn’t always equate to strength. There are many fabrics in the market that are lighter than others, but still out perform in the field of overall strength. It has everything to do with the way in which they are knitted. Monotec 370 shade cloth is one of the highest in weight and later in this article I will discuss the strength factors. The test standard for this test is AS2001.2.13 Next is a breaking force test; because knitted fabrics are opposite of woven fabrics, the warp yarns are traditionally the weaker of the two yarns. Breaking force tests are performed in both the warp and weft directions of the fabric. The Monotec shade cloth outperforms other products in both the warp and weft fibers in terms of breaking force. The test standard for this test is AS2001.2.13 Another test is elongation, which is important because it determines how much pre-stress you can put on the fabric and determines the difficulty involved with patterning the fabric as you must account for the stretch factor when patterning. When it comes to elongation, the lower the number the better as that means less patterning concerns and the ability to tension on-site without possibilities of fabric stretching once it conforms to the environment. The closer the numbers are between the warp and weft also determine dimensional stability in the knit pattern itself. The Monotec product has a 24.4% differential in warp and weft. Monofilament yarns unlike tape yarns, have memory and do return to their original shape and size if stretched. Monotec 370 is one of the few all round monofilament fabrics on the market today and can stretch over 50% under load (IE: snow) and still return to its original shape and size. The test standard for this test is AS2001.2.13 Then there is the tear resistance test, which is just as it states; the ability to resist tearing and nothing in the market today resists tearing like Monotec 370 Shade Cloth. Tear resistance is also measured in both the warp and weft directions. The test standard for this test is AS2001.2.13 A final test looks at bursting pressure and bursting force which is the ability to resist impact tested in two different methods and again nothing will outperform the Monotec 370 product. The test standard for this test is AS2001.2.13 There are other important standards relating to shade cloth such as flame retardancy where fire codes would be involved with the structure. Monotec is one of the few products available that passes multiple fire ratings and has a California State Fire Marshall Title 19 approval, this is important when permitting projects as fire codes are becoming more stringent on fabric structures. Finally, one of the most important factors to consider when evaluating shade cloth is the Warranty it carries. Monotec offers the best warranty in the industry and has an award-winning reputation internationally. The life of the shade cloth depends on the construction and more importantly the quality of the UV stabilizer in the material of the shade cloth. Because the shade cloth absorbs some of the UVR, a shade cloth with less UV stabilizer may break-down, or fail in sunlight faster than other fabrics. This is the primary reason Monotec offers a 15-year warranty against UV failure on its Non-FR shade cloths as well as a 10 year on the FR shade cloth as flame retardants offset UV stabilizers. If you want to learn more about Monotec 370, contact me, Dr. Shade at firstname.lastname@example.org or call us at 877-959-7902, as we have the published data for most of our competitors and can provide you with the tools to compare Monotec to any of the competitors.
For most of us land pollution may not be the first thing on the mind every day, but consider this; due to land pollution, the earth loses approximately 25 billion tons of valuable top soil each year! Wow, now that gets my attention! Here’s another staggering statistic; it takes at least 500 years for 9.8 inches of top soil to regenerate! In addition, land pollution can cause skin problems, birth defects, respiratory issues and a number of other diseases. So here’s where I’m going with this; many industries who work with land polluting chemicals are under strict national guidelines to contain these chemicals and protect against land pollution. This means any type of chemical discharge or hazardous component must be contained and disposed of without polluting the landfill. Value Vinyls offers a proven Geomembrane Fabric, GTX-30 that contains and protects against the harshest chemicals with the assurance of no leaching into the ground. GTX-30 is a chemical resistant coated 30 oz. vinyl that has been developed to withstand long term exposure to an extensive range of harsh chemicals, including a number of harmful oils, acids and methane contaminates. GTX-30 is the optimum chemically resistant fabric for landfill pond liners, storm water runoff, municipal waste water ponds, containment, floor coverings, oil storage, and other applications where chemical containment is required. GTX-30 has also been engineered with superior physical strength, high durability, and welding and water repellant properties. GTX-30 is also puncture resistant and built with exceptional dimensional stability. Here’s the icing on the cake, GTX-30 carries a 7 year limited warranty to stand the test of time in the field. THE BOTTOM LINE; GTX-30 may be your containment solution! So if land polluting solutions are on your mind, I encourage you to take a look at GTX-30 and give this amazing product a try. ARTICLE BY: Marc Shellshear / Dr. Shade Many different coatings, chemicals, and characteristics can be incorporated into fabrics to make them last longer, have better durability and different appearances. Soluna fabric is a 19-oz. waterproof fabric with a low sheen orange peel emboss. The interesting thing about this product is that it looks like an acrylic from a distance but has all the characteristics of a PVC. That means you can have the look and feel of acrylic but meet all the flame-retardancy requirements as the Soluna product passes ASTM E-84, NFPA-701, and CSFM – Title 19. Soluna has been used for awnings, canopies, and many other Industrial and Athletic applications because it is highly resistant to mildew and fungus and comes with a 5-year UV warranty. Value Vinyls has tested the product to over 1000 hours in our QUV testing machine with no fading. The orange peel emboss gives the product a unique matte finish and the acrylic lacquer adds to the overall durability of the product. The Soluna product is a unique alternative to traditional PVC and traditional Acrylic. As a fabricator in the industry for over 20 years, I view our Soluna product to be a truly unique product for your customer’s applications. The product is easily weldable using hot air, wedge, or RF/HF welding. Additionally, it has a great hand, is easy to fabricate and offers your customers a unique solution to an old problem of water repellant versus waterproof with Acrylic awning fabrics. Soluna is also easy for commercial permitting because of the multiple fire ratings. Contact myself at email@example.com / 940-205-0434 or contact our Value Vinyls Sales Support team at firstname.lastname@example.org / 877-716-6651 if you are interested in receiving more information regarding Soluna and samples.

From time to time we hear of a new “superbug” making the rounds and the concerns or difficulty with keeping these new strains of bacteria under control. Here in the United States, a superbug that has been of ongoing concern is MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureaus), with over 1% of the human population being carriers of this bacteria. MRSA is a form of staphylococcus (staph) infection and was first identified as such in 1968. This troubling form of bacteria is of major concern due to its strong resistance to the most common available antibiotic drugs. Although the fatality rate is low, there is much uncertainty as to why some people are more susceptible to severe, and while rare, sometimes fatal infections from MRSA. Statistics show that 1 in 100 children playing in a gym or 1 in 100 patients in a hospital carry and can easily spread the varying strains of staph including MRSA on commonly used surfaces like exercise mats, wall pads and medical beds. The good news is Value Vinyls can help minimize the spread of the varying staph bacterias with our selection of specialized products! We have extensive expertise and a strong emphasis on product development addressing the most common types of staph bacteria, including MRSA. Some of Value Vinyls’ most popular fabrics are treated with DuraGUARD or BACshield anti-fungal and anti-bacterial additives, ensuring these products exceed all safety testing standards. DuraGUARD is an EPA-registered additive that prevents 99.99% bacterial growth on a product, making the spread of MRSA or any other type staphylococcus nearly impossible to grow. Advantage Sportiva 18 oz. coated vinyl from Value Vinyls is a premium athletic product treated with DuraGUARD EPA-registered anti-microbial treatment. BACshield is an additive that is 99% staphylococcuus resistant, and provides the same amount of protection as DuraGUARD. Champion 14, Impact 16, Advantage MVP 18 and Suplex 24 athletic vinyl products are amongst the Value Vinyls products that include the high performing BACshield additive. It is important to ensure that products manufactured with vinyl for recreation centers, schools, hospitals, daycares, gymnasiums and other public spaces are made with the appropriate, certified vinyl to ensure consistent protection from MRSA and other harmful fungus and bacteria. Our very simple advice – don’t use truck tarp vinyls for fighting Staph! Pads and mats made from untreated truck tarp vinyl can be culprits for spreading MRSA to athletes, patients and kids who come in contact with them. Eliminate fear and ensure your customers of increased safety by using the DuraGUARD and BACshield treated vinyl fabrics from Value Vinyls for your important projects! For further and more detailed information on this very important safety matter, please click here to view and download the Value Vinyls Engineered Protection brochure. Did you know there are an estimated 15.5 million trucks operating on United States roads at any given time, logging over 400 billion miles each year? Some statistics I reviewed recently showed the United States economy depends on trucks to deliver nearly 70% of all freight transported annually, accounting for over $600 billion worth of manufactured and retail goods. That’s a lot of trucks on the road at any given time and fortunately for our industry, many of these trucks require truck tarps! Today, Value Vinyls supports many companies across the North America with an extensive range of products for truck tarp applications. These fabrics are developed to handle even the most extreme conditions, such as frigid cold or scorching hot temperatures, including ice and snow, sleet, rain, hail and even wind whip from open-road hauling. Taking all of these things into account, manufacturing suitable truck tarps can bring challenges to fabricators both in the fabric selection due to fabric performance characteristics and also in the fabrication process itself. With over 30 years of experience in truck tarp fabric development, the team at Value Vinyls has the expertise and knowledge to help you tackle these challenges and get the job done right. Let’s explore some of these challenges along with the Value Vinyls solutions. Delamination is a bad word! Truck Tarps are constantly handled and must be flexible to perform with constant folding, unfolding and maneuvering of the goods they are protecting. Without flexibility the material may be subject to delamination which is the breakdown and separation of the coating from the scrim, ultimately leading to the weakening of the fabric. This issue is common however, not with fabrics from Value Vinyls! Uniquely, all truck tarp fabrics from Value Vinyls have increased flexibility to help minimize delamination and ensure product longevity. Attacking cold-crack! Exposure to below freezing temperatures and even lower wind chill temperatures from wind exposure on the open road can lead to cold-crack and the rapid deterioration of the fabric. Value Vinyls understands the specialized fabric formulation required for truck tarp fabrics to withstand up to -30 degree temperatures from cold-crack and can assure you our products do this. Forget the mold and mildew! When exposed to moisture, truck tarp fabrics can form mold and mildew in the seams and crevices, which can lead to the fabric looking unsightly and longer-term deterioration of the fabric. With the inclusion of anti-fungus and anti-mildew additives to keep bacteria from growing, Value Vinyls truck tarp fabrics are high performing and will look great longer. Combating against UV fading and degradation! Truck Tarps are constantly exposed to the sun’s harmful UV rays. UV leads to color fade as well as degradation of the top coating. Value Vinyls’ formulation includes superior levels of UV treatment to ensure truck tarp fabrics withstand the sun’s harsh rays. Oh, how supple it is! One of the most common concerns for a fabricator is the fabric is hard to handle during the fabrication process. We understand the importance of this and our truck tarp fabric range includes products with a supple hand to make it easier when cutting, sewing or welding during manufacturing and installation. Of course the larger the truck tarp, the harder it will always be to manage! Value Vinyls’ material can be worked on in large yardage needs with no problems. When it comes to industrial vinyl and truck tarp fabrics that are exposed to all types of elements and extreme conditions, the team at Value Vinyls are your trusted advisors. Talk to our experienced team today and explore our extensive range of all-weather truck tarp fabric solutions!
